  • Recent Club Activities

Last weekend wrapped up a really busy time for our club. In March alone, your ELT team exchanged over 500 emails coordinating, making decisions, and sorting out logistics for the 2005 season! Thanks to our sponsors and members, everything was very successful. Here are a few things we've been up to:

    2005 Preparations

A lot of the work for the year is done even before the first car leaves the start line. The year's goals are defined, dates are chosen, venue deposits made, insurance and permits acquired, and sponsorship deals are finalized. We're all set to go, and we are excited to bring our members some great events this year.

    Pacific International Auto Show

One of our goals this year is to increase our membership, and the number of people participating in autocross in general. One way to do this is to improve the public profile of the club and the Pacific International Auto Show is a great venue.

Thanks to our sponsors, we were able to put on a really professional display. Kumho Tire Canada provided displays, lighting, tires, and brochures to give our display a really professional look. PDM Racing provided a 240SX with an engine bay that attracted lots of attention and had people stopping to look at what our booth was all about. Harvest Productions put together a great VCMC promotional video using footage that was taken from the 2004 Kumho Super Challenge event - watch for a download link to this video soon. When people give you that puzzled look when you describe autocross, this fast-paced video will help get the message across.

A special thanks goes out to our members who volunteered to take time out of their personal lives and help to man our booth - you all did a great job of being embassadors of VCMC, and our sport!

    Velocity Driving School

For the 2005 season, VCMC past-president and suspension guru Alex Chiu stepped in as Velocity School Director to continue Cliff Loh's legacy of the Velocity driving school. Alex is trying a new school format this year which gives students customized training and additional time on a full autocross course. If student feedback is any indication, our first Velocity session of the year went very well. First-timers to the sport were able get a guided introduction to our sport, while experienced students were able to gain feedback on their skills from some extremely experienced instructors.

    Driving Television

Public Relations director Steve Kibble and VCMC members helped the crew at Driving Television to film a segment on the sport of autocross. This weekly show is broadcast across Canada and on the web. Watch for the release of this feature in June of this year.

Just as a reminder, here are the upcoming VCMC events for the next few months:

    April 30th Velocity Driving School
May 1st Novice Championship Tour #1 / practice event, sponsored by PDM Racing
May 8th CACC Regional #1 (hosted by UBCSCC)
    June 4th Velocity Driving School
June 5th CACC Regional #2 (hosted by VCMC)
June 25/26 Kumho Super Challenge Weekend

For those who may be new to this club, this year is the third annual running of the Kumho Super Challenge - a two day event with prizes, dinner banquet, and the crowning of an overall Kumho Super Challenge Shoot-out winner. This event is only possible with the generous support of Kumho Tire Canada, and attracts many of the top autocrossers from BC and Washington state. Don't miss this event!

    Re: Recent Club Activities

So that's what DTV stands for!

Sounds like VCMC is off to another good season. I'm especially looking forward to Kumho Super Challenge, if it's anything like last year's. I recommend it to all new-comers.
If I keep changing colors... I just might win a jacket!
