  • Drivers Edge - BCMA Solo I

    Hey Guys,

As mentioned at the last club meeting and posted here:

Drivers Edge is presenting, and BCMA is hosting, a Solo I at Mission Raceway Park. The event will be on Monday August 5th which is a long weekend, what else are you going to do, cut the grass!?

We will be posting the supplemental rules soon but for the most part the specs required will be as per the CACC Solo I rules. Along the lines of a CACC solo I license (novices are OK), 5 point CGR approved harness, non-synth clothing (ie. no polyester, people still wear that?), SA helmet, GCR approved roll over protection for cars on slicks and/or convertibles (hardtops on convertibles will waive that requirement). We will be providing extra assistance/instruction for novice drivers.

This is the first real solo I we have this year and one of the few that will allow most of you to run! If you have never run at Mission Raceway Park this is must do, this is the new configuration as with the new "Greg Moore" turn.

The format is great, all morning will be a practice session where we will have multiple cars on the track (limited passing rules) which will give you tons of track time. The afternoon is a solo I format in which we will have limited amount of cars on the track at one time and you will get timed hot laps. This is just more than fun; we will have cool trophies as well for the class winners!

What we need to know is how many people are interested in coming so we can finalise the planning. Please post up on this thread if you plan on coming/questions.

The cost of the event is $150, and we will take credit card payment. It might sound pricey but for those of you in the know you know that this is a good deal for a dedicated solo I/practice day.

      Is this for real?

I would love to try doing some Solo I events if all I need to do is get a harness and put the hardtop on the Miata. As for a rollbar, I don't think I can get my helmet 2" under the bar as per SCCA regs so I have yet to bother installing one.

            Hi Don,

It is for real!! You just have to go with the five point and use the factory hard top. Better get your harness installed quick.

Will my car be allowed on the track at the same time as other fender cars? I know most events don't allow that. Also, will there be a noise limit? I thought 96db was the road race limit.

I think you'll have to carry one of those head-lamps to "flash-to-pass".

well i have been holding off on getting a harnessbar/harness in the car but this sounds too good to miss out on so i may have to have a quick chat with mr. Chris Beere (are you listening out there?) about making said bar. how much wear&tear can we expect on our cars from such an event? (eg. will i have any tires left to autox on? brake pads? ...)

I am here young Yarko awaiting your call! email me privately if you want. [email protected]

As far as tire wear you will probably see less wear than a long day at BBay. Just drive over all the Marbles at the end of the day and you will actually have more rubber on your tires than when you started!!

Hi Johnny, just got a question here.

Regarding the harness, does it have to meet current standards? will I be able to convert my 5 years old, used 4 pt harness bought from a fellow autocrosser into a 5 pt. that I can use at this event?

                        thanks in adavance,

is the ability to have the hardtop waive the gcr roll over requirement a regular thing or just special for this particular solo1 event? (important in making my decision to run the event)

                            Hi Gary,

The belts must meet the CACC GCR requirements, which means that your belts are probably too old. You could change them to newer belts, technically you cant even use the ones you have for AutoXing so maybe it wouldnt be a bad idea anyways.

                              Hi Yarko,

The hardtop rule is standard in the trackday and Canadain Solo I scene (and most US trackday events). So are you asking me if this would let you run more events using this rule, YES. The only events you would not be able to run are the events that the host club wants to run higher standards (like SCCBC) or hillclimbs. There is going to be a Trackday hosted by BCMC in October and possibly another Drivers Edge event in September.
