  • Today's Test&Tune

Thanks to everyone who helped make today a really useful and informative event. Special thanks to Don and Joe for helping me setup up the car right.

I would recommend to anyone that haven't been to one of these Test&Tunes to attend next time around. Really useful.

    Hey Omid,

Your car looked great with those wheels on it! Hedwig, what did Gary have to say about your car? Rob and I had conflicting opinions of the car. I thought it felt really good in the sweepers and not so great in the slalom (not so great being relative considering how quick the run was). Chris D, I really cannot believe that run in the 911 was a 46 second run, all day I was very close in predicting what the time was, usually down to 2/10ths. That run felt like a 43-44 second run, I was really shocked it was that slow.

I think Doug has an interesting story to tell today, heheheheh. Thanks to all those guys that reconstructed the tirewall

Yeah those wheels and tires are really good thanks to John at Rensport.
I was hitting rev buzzer in 2nd through the slalom and my times were down 2seconds from the morning with help of Don and Joe.

It was nice knowing a car can actually go through a tirewall

I thought the event was great! The seat time was incredible. I ran my car until the brakes faded and my car blew a cv boot and spewed grease all over my wheel well (guess that explains the loud clunking I heard!).

The heat stroke wasn't fun though...

Joe: You know, Terrence, you really need clear corners and a M package front end to finish the look..

Terrence: Yeah, but look, I got no money in my pocket...

                  Hmmm....well Yarko...*How do you say...SLAT!" :P

Farz decided to take me for a spin in the Talon. Since it was my first time in the talon I kinda got the feeling of butterflies in the stomach. After collecting the thoughts in the old noggin, Farz says "Okay, I'm gonna launch it a little harder than usual..." Then he revs the engine and launches the car. I think i blacked out cuz the acceleration was incredible. Through the slolam we go and it seems really good, handling and power wise. Farz lets the rear end slip out a little bit then plants it towards the sweeper, a good fast controlled line, if i has to say so. Then for some reason we enter the sweeper at an alarming rate at which I would of braked about a good 30 feet prior. Then the car breaks loose sliding sideways towards the tire wall...well let just say the if Farz didn't turn the wheel and aimed for the wall, well things might have not been so good. Next thing I know I'm looking at the wall and braced myself for an impact and then boom! I see tires exploding, rolling down the other runway... Then we stop and I look at Farz, expecting some profanities to come out of his mouth but then he begins to laugh...kinda like the Montgomery Burns kinda laugh?!?! (shhh...I think he's a little crazy...) Turns out the brakes didn't quite exactly do what they were supposed to do. Well i got to see both how crazy fast the talon is and how forgiving the tire wall was too! That was it in a nut shell...hey why wern't you there? Late night huh? Bwhahaah!

Firstly, thanks to you, Rob and Gary for driving/commenting on the suspension issues. Gary mentioned that the damping is way low and the chassis was all over the place. He said that the suspension seem to be operating out its range and if i increase the rebound damping, it should stabilize the car a ton. Rob didn't seem to mind the slalom/transition so much but both you and Gary commented that it was still transferring weight when you need to get on with the gas. I felt that it was sluggish enuff that a novice like me can catch it if i were to make a boo-boo.

WRT the sweeper...i thought you didnt mind it so much but you were dabbing the throttle/brake? to get it to rotate. Rob felt it had a ton of mid early-mid corner understeer so he had to wait forever before getting on the gas. I had the same conclusion but i tend to not wait and make the car push wide. Gary said worry about the damping then worry about the understeer.

Here's my question: Gary recommended upping the rebound damping + lowering the front. I guess the latter will a) load the front tires more and b) increase my camber. But after corner weighting, my car had the following:

                    LF: 833 RF: 812
                    LR: 419 RR: 370
                    LF-RR: 49.4%
                    RF-LR: 50.6%

Wouldnt lowering the front mess up the "balance"? And what effect does raking the roll axis have wrt oversteer/understeer. I checked out http://www.technicalf1.com/ but i kinda too dumb for those discussions. Jacking? Shock split?

                    Thx in advance.

                      Am I missing something? I would've thought that 3rd-gen RX7 had a more 50-50 weight distribution!

Well something majorly is wrong with those numbers, your car + driver should be around 3200lbs, the number you have there are not even close

Doh...ur correct. I was looking @ the sheet Law wrote out for me....but the wrong side (musta been for his Civic).

                          LF: 782 RF: 684
                          LR: 791 RR: 743
                          LF-RR: 50.8%
                          RF-LR: 49.2%
                          FRONT: 48.9%
                          REAR: 51.1%

                          See...told u i was not mechanically inclined.

Lower the front would get rid of some of the understeer.

I have to say that most of the cars I drove on Sunday were under-damped. That seemed to be the common problem.

My whole life seems to be under-damped.
