  • August 11 Closed Club post event discussion

Please provide any feedback, both positive and not-so-positive for today's closed club event. We had three new volunteers running the event this weekend, Mason as event organizer and Omid and Steve as course designers.

On the whole I would say tyhe even went very well. I think the course was interesting and provided for multiple lines. Once we started racing things seemed to go very smoothly. However, as a worker do have a complaint or two. this is not about the organizers but about the drivers. Without pointing fingers directly, there were a couple drivers during my work assignment that seemed not to share the same goal as most of us out there...improvement. They performed multiple DNF's with no visibile desire or effort to correct their mistakes. Another of these drivers performed multiple spins, in one case coming quite close to some workers. A spin is fine but one must no how to correct, control or avoid dangerous contact with workers. This particular driver did none of the above and actually tried to power out of the maneuver bringing him closer to the workers. I don't know if this bothered the workers as much as myself watching but I think it needs to be stated. We're out their for fun, and to enjoy competitive, good natured day of racing. I find this type of driving diminishes that. It makes me think more of "street racing style" than what I've come to expect of auto-crossers. I hope the people that have this attitude, will cure themselves of it and actually make an effort to improve before coming out to the next event. If that desire is not there, then I myself would prefer not to see them there.

On a positive note I found a lot of great driving today, a good course, great weather and good fun. Thanks to Steve, Omid and Mason for putting on a good event.

Now that a few people have given their thoughts, I'll add mine in.

I thought the event ran very well. The worker rotations were a bit slow, but we had a significant number of new members finding their way around. I thought the new members did really well in getting into the groove very quickly.

The course was awesome. A truly well built course that included fast and slow sections, minimal cones and a technical area that allowed you to choose your lines around the sweepers. What makes this really amazing is that this was Omid and Steve's first course! I've never seen a first course turn out like that. The Roger Johnson course design tech session we recently hosted is already paying off. Great work you guys.

Mason did an admirable job running the event and also signing up 12 new members! The guys from www.ballisticarts.com had a great day and enjoyed videotaping the people, the cars and most importantly, the spirit of our members.

One thing I'd like to mention on a personal note. It makes me so happy to see the members of the club interacting with each other, helping each other and pushing each other to go faster. This is what a motorsport organization is all about, this is why we stand in the blaring sunlight for 6+ hours and run for only a few minutes. This closed club really highlighted for me as Ted and Tak kept mentioning how friendly everyone is to each other, quite a contrast to the car shows that they normally film.

To all the organizors and helpers, thanks for putting on a super efficient day where 71 drivers got six runs that were on average 60 seconds long. Thanks to the course designers for doing an amazing job on their first try.

        Thanks,
        Farzaan

The event was very fun, thanks to Mason. The course was very good too, thanks to Omid and Steve.
Nice to hear my friend Jason (A4_30) enjoy going autoX, hope he will come all the time like me in the future.
Farzaan, you were so fast in the 911, can even get close to you even with slick tires.
I'm going back to HK tonight, for 3 week. I will miss the next championship. So see you guys again in the last championship again.

I was talking to Jason at Station 1 for in the morning. He seems very keen on racing - though I told him that you should ask Cary about all his car setups to go faster

i really enjoyed the course. i especially liked the last half of the track where i was able to stay on the gas for a fair amount of time.

the only things i can think of were the delays in teh work station change overs and space around the grid/entrance/exit/timing and scoring tent was a little tight.

i also noticed some wreckless driving too. there is a difference between pushing your car to the limit and sometimes going over and just plain wrecklessness.

i was surprised that such a long course we could get 6 runs in.

I loved the event, great atmosphere and I met a lot of new people.. I think this event (CC #7) also marked 2 years of being involved with the club.. even though I've just been spectating for the last 2 years.

I think it's been 2 years.. anyway, great job guys!

I too had a great day and would like to thank Omid and Steve for designing a course with lotsa fun. I love a course when after each run, it brings a to ur face.
I did see a few reckless driving during the day and i wasnt surprised to seet that happen. Im sure autoxing isnt for everyone...they will either come back to participate or just move on. They are new to the club and sport so perhaps one or two more events will change their attitude and will start to display some good driving.
I personally liked having no stop box...saves my brakes

Hi just a quick introduction, since this is my first post. I'm the driver of the Red Rx7 with Bronze rims. My name is Tony and this open club event was my first time at AutoX. I indeed had a great time and learned alot that day. Especially the consequences of oversteer and understeer.

Well I would like to apologize to everyone and especailly to the people in station 6 for my driving habits. After reviewing the day I realized the stupidty of my driving could have injured and cause harm to them. I overestimated my skills and my car, believing I could overpower the turn, however with my little experience I ended up spinning out alot. Thus making a big fool of myself and causing harm to people around me. I remeber I got advice to take it easy and to let off accerleration while in a slide. But I ended up repeating the same mistakes over again.

I'm very sorry to everyone for the stupidty I displayed in control of my car and in myself. I thank everyone for the tips and advice they gave me on driving. Hopefully this event won't tarnish everyone as seeing me as the reckless driver. I do plan on attending additional VCMC events to learn more about driving. So please if this happens again tell me so I'll correct my mistake.

                        Thx

                        Tony

                          Tony,

I'm Farzaan, VCMC president driving the blue 911 that day (usually drive a black Talon or black Supra). It takes a really mature person to come onto a board and apologize, I really admire what you did here today. The weekend is now in the past and long forgotten. I look forward to seeing you at many more future events. Welcome to the club.

                            Tony,

At VCMC's Velocity Driving School, we use the slogan "Precision, smoothness and control". These are the three key factors in high performance driving. Control is a major part of race car driving technique. All our graduates routinely demonstrate those techniques in competition driving. Sign up for next season's Velocity School and you can learn all about it. Welcome to the sport.

Mistakes happen, it's cool you apologized and understood you were pushing it a bit too hard. Keep coming to the events and keep picking the brains of the senior drivers and you'll learn the best way to drive your car in no time.

And as Joe said, the Velocity driving school is awesome from what I hear. That's one thing I'll probably sign up for once I'm able to AutoX
