  • Carroll Smith

Apparently, Mr. Smith will be at this year's Nationals. His visit is sponsored by Mid-Atlantic Motorsport and SCCA. He will be giving a seminar and will be signing books etc. He confessed to Tom that he has never been to an autox ever. He will be updating his books, maybe he will include a section on autox setups.

Talked to Hoosier Tom today. Carroll Smith will be flying in on Monday night. Check out some cars on Tuesday (mainly Mod cars according to Tom and he mentioned he wants Carroll to see the Phantom and George Bowland's car for sure to see what he thinks) and there will be an infomal gathering late afternoon at the site at one of the buildings (I know where it is, it's where they have the town-hall style rules discussion each year). There is no format decided yet on how the gathering will be conducted. Apparently, SCCA is paying for Carroll's plane ticket and hotel. Tom is picking up the cost of his car rental.

For those who will be there, think about what questions you want to ask. I already have mine. Peter Raymond and I could not agree on why lateral movement of roll centre during suspension movement is not important. Maybe we can get a third opinion from Smith.

I wondered about the same question myself. There's been some debate on the Formula Ford Forum about current suspension philosophies for road racing and the trend has been to go stiffer...up to 200% wheel rates on modern FF without aero. In order to make such stiff rates work, the motion ratios have to be fairly large so small suspension movements can translate to larger spring/shock movements. The goal of all this is to minimize roll center movement and to maintain the designed suspension geometry. With a stiffer setup, suspension balance changes are more effective as well. Older cars using rockers like the Swift can run only to around 120% wheel rates before rocker flex becomes significant.

I'd be interested in listening to what Carol and others have to say as well.
