Hitting cones is part of the learning process. I leave cone marks on my beautifully painted and waxed white car's lower door panels all the time. I just don't want to see somebody refrain from trying things out because they're afraid to hit cones.

A cone got wedged against my headers once. Even though I pulled it out, the car smelled like melting plastic every time I drove it for a couple weeks.

One time I hit one of those lighter/taller/harder cones and the paint from my front bumper was cracked and peeling off big time and had to be repainted. Another time I had my front quarter panel dented (can't remember which type of cone though) by at least an inch deep at the area where mud guard is usually mounted at (you can check out my car next time you come out).
I hit my fair share of cones and the never do anything to my car. I remember Don saying that the early white miatas has problems with their paint. Have you seen his??? It's not pretty it wouldn’t surprise me if that contributed to the cones effecting you paint job. As for the dent *** . Are you sure it cone related???

I know about early white miata paint, but my car was painted in '99, special treated bumper to flex paint, and 2 layers of clear coat. When I hit that tall cone, I was at WOT end of 2nd gear 8000rpm (over 100km/h). As for the dent, I know I didn't hit anything else on that day.

The moral of the story is...

Don't hit cones!
