  • the Susquehanna Launch Light

I've gotten a few questions about the launch light, so I thought I'd post an explanation.

There will still be a grid worker and a scanner person. After you are scanned and the car before you has launched, you crawl up to the line, all like before. Only there won;t be a person waving you up and then waving "stop," but there'll be a home-made traffic-light (thanks Cliff!). It will be blank as you approach and will turn red when you break the beam. Feel free to back up if you think that you've rolled too far, but if you lose the red light, then you've backed up too far and must crawl forward again. The light will not go green unless you are breaking the beam and seeing a red light.

At some point (when it's safe for you to go), the starter will press and hold a button and the red light will switch to green. No, you do not have to leave immediately and the clock doesn't start until you break the second beam (i.e., the one hooked up to the computer). But just like with a person waving you on to the course, you shouldn't sit there all day before leaving.

In other words, think of the red light as the starter saying "stop there," and the green light as the starter saying "go," and you're all set.

We will do a demo at the drivers' meeting.

This could well be a myth, but supposedly the inventor is Mike Bikle from the Susquehanna Region of the SCCA. Since in autoXing we name things for where the inventor is from (e.g., Chicago Box, Brookville Box, and Yaletown Box ), that's what I called it.

Thanks, but did you realize that one way to read the above is that you think that my jokes are not good work? Well, you're not the first to suggest this.
