  • Vernon - Regional 6

I'll be heading up to Vernon for Regional 6 just wondering what to expect since I've never been up there.

    1) Where's a good place to stay?
    2) What kind of surface? Someone said it was asphalt with lots of dirt on it last year?
    3) Do most people run both Saturday and Sunday?

    Thanks.

I suggest camping, it's cheap and there are lots of nice places in Vernon. You don't want to go to Vernon to get only one day of racing. Do both and make your drive worthwhile. Yes, it's asphalt with very fine dirt on it, and it's a little bumpy. Very smooth, but ripply pavement.

There's lots of "No-Tell Motels" in Vernon, Camping is also available, though I don't know any nearby campsites. I'll do some checking....

There's a wack of bed&breakfasts on the way up to Silverstar, but they tend to be pricey. If you stay on the main drag heading through Vernon (don't turn off towards SilverStar anywhere), on the right past the London Drugs is a nice motel/hotel. Might be a best western or equiv.

Lucky me - my mumsie lives in Vernon (I know where I'll be staying)!

Ellison park is nice to camp at. Not sure of availability at this time though.

What date is the regional on? And where is it?

        Thanks,

It's on the 25th and 26th of August in Vernon, about 30 minutes north of Kelowna.

Not sure of the exact location - I'm sure we'll get the invitation soon.

I found two campsites for you in Vernon.

One is just off Kal Lake road (go into Vernon down the hill, turn right at the first light (fruit union plaza ahead on right), then right at the next light, and then right at the next light. You are now driving around Polson mall and cinema on Kal Lake Road. As you get closer to the lake, there is a camp site on the right hand side just before an inconvenience store.

Second is past Vernon, on highway heading to Armstrong/Enderby/Salmon Arm. Highway goes four lane, and there should be one not far from the Squires Four pub (nudge nudge wink wink). I am not sure which side of the highway it was on (was kind of drunk at the time....).

Sorry I don't know street names. I always drive by "turn left where they tore down the old church, then a right where that truck was for sale for a long time, and when you get the house that the Jones' almost bought - that's too far.

The event should be held at Silver Star Mountain, and that's on the road that the ICBC claim center is on - just south of the Village Green Mall.

              Gawd I'm terrible.

                    Hi Greg,

I've looked through the site that you've posted a while ago, there are lots of info on motel/hotels. However, I am not sure which one is good (in terms of whether they are close to the site, and in terms of price). Can someone recommend me places that they have stayed before (or know) that is nice?

Well, since I lived out there (an d am living not far form there again), I never really stayed in a hotel/motel.

I did visit my aunt when she was staying at a either the Best Western or the Prestige Inn (I can't remember, either one is pretty nice) at the bottom of Silver Star road. Very nice, but rates start at $99 a night. Get a bunch of buddies and sleeping bags and split the cost (but only one guy go in and rent the room, eh?)

I don't remember the Best Western Villager, it's probably as good as any other B/W.

Sandman Inns are usually good, the Village Green Hotel is good. (A buddy of mine canoed through the natural creek that flows through the lobby)

Pretty much all the ones listed are decent, I don't recall any of them being dives.

There was one just at the bottom of the hill going into Vernon before you get to hwy 6 on the left hand side. Whatever that motel was called, assuming it's still there, looked really shabby. But that hill is the cheap part of town. The farther north you go, the more recent the development.

Pretty much everything is within 30 minutes of Silver Star, and the traffic ain't anything like Vancouver.

It's unfortunate that this is their "season" for making money, so even the cheapest accomodation might be min. $75 a night. Tourism is a big industry in the Interior.

Thanks Greg for your info. Probably I'll rent a suite with kitchen with a few buddies so we could make dinner there as well.

I can recommend the Sandman Suites for this (just stayed there for a week). They're new (1 year old) and in the middle of Vernon. Has Denny's attached to it and quite reasonable. Rates are $89.75 for 2 people/1 bed, or $94.75 for 2 people/2 beds. Just ask for their "corporate rate" to get this rate. They said you don't need to have a company for this.

You can reach them at 1-800-sandman or www.sandman.ca

Vernon is really beautiful, definitely try to stay there a few extra days if you can to enjoy the lakes, scenery, outdoors!

                            Hey Lisa,

Thanks for the recommendation, however I've just reserved a suite at Silverstar Club resorts for 5 adults with kitchen. It costs $109 a night so it's quite reasonable.

Are you going to Vernon Lisa?

P.S. How do you quote someone's message here like you just did? How to do that?

I'm staying at the Casa de la Mumsie, $0 each day, and a home cooked meal every evening! My own house is only 35 minutes away, too!

God I love this country! I can ride my bicycle to Knox mountain every day! Fabulous!
