  • Thank you Sead!

Had an AWESOME time at the CC yesterday. I was thinking of sleeping in and calling it a season, but I'm glad I didn't! Thanks Sead for the tips and advice. I didn't blow off my fastest times with the new techniques, but I know that's only because I wasn't used to it. But I definitely see the potential there with different hand placements on the steering wheel. Thanks again, y'all watch out next year...I'm comin fer ya

    Hi Mase,
Just curious, what's your best time yesterday?(because I'm in D/SP too, hehe)

I believe my best times were a 1:12.8XX and 1:12.9XX. Couple cones here and there of course! What about you ?

My best was the 8th run 1:09:930. But that was with Hoosiers which I corded three out of four yesterday. So when I put the Kumho back, I expect it will be about 1 sec slower. When I was working at station three, I saw your car quite powerful(rev up quite fast). I think if you have better tires, you can cut at least couple seconds yesterday. I guess it will be fun next year in D/SP.

Ouch! That's why I'm too scared to run Hoosiers...I'd destroy them...

No, those Hoosiers are pretty worn before yesterday. They were from Vincent, I bought the wheels from him but he's kind enough to throw those Hoosiers in for free. He has been using it the whole 2001 season, the tread is only down to last 5% before yesterday. That's why I want to "finish" them yesterday so I can mount my Kumho on the wheels. Hoosier's grip is awesome but the price you pay is even more awesome. $287cdn vs $186cdn(for Kumho).

It's been quite a while that I haven't had such an awesome high-speed CC course. I must say that Terence has done a great job in shaving time big time in his BMW this last few events. In just THREE event weekends, his time started off from +6sec to +1sec down to -1.5sec compare with mine.

Careful planning, adapting to his new suspension and tires with totally different characteristics in such a short period of time is no easy job.

The Hoosiers helped his time a lot but having been his passenger, I realize he ran a much smoother line in his BMW which rewards it, compare to my miata which doesn't favor smooth input at all with the 032R and factory viscous LSD.

                Hi Chris,

I dunno, I tend to disagree with you on that. The run I rode in with you I thought your car does turn in well, and overall handles very good. I can't believe there's a car out there than doesn't favor smooth input. But you rode with me in Joe's Miata also, we definitely have different styles of attack huhh. You know your car well and can drive it at its limit. I was surprised that you can drive with so much sliding, it sure was a lot more excitment (kinda scary as a passenger really).

I think we both pulled 1:12s, I know I don't drift and slide the way you do, but what happens when you use smooth inputs? Did you think I was using smooth inputs in the Joe's turbo?

It's good that you bring this up for discussion, Robert.

Unfortunately, the run you rode in my car was a bad run. I tried to drive harder to close up my time gap from Terence but I did the wrong thing. I should have driven smoother instead of pushing harder. That's why I blew the 180 closest to the timing Jeep and couldn't even run 3rd on the long straight after. So NO! Those sliding around were not intended.

I wished you were riding in my smoother 3rd run of the day that turned 1:10s, using 3rd gear for half of the straight and compared my high-end hp with Joe's turbo. Even that, the smoother input from that and other quicker runs (still with mistakes and slid too much) was still not the kind of smooth input required for most other cars.

Regarding Joe's turbo car, the undersprung [edited: I meant underdamp] suspension, street alignment, slower-throttle-response, and progressive torque output definitely need smoother input than with my setup strived for SIR track day.

As for what happen if I use smoother input, check out the 2 videos in this thread:

                  http://www.vcmc.ca/ubb/Forum3/HTML/000014.html

In the 2nd video, I was holding my steering steady thru' an offset gate and holding WOT. When engine reached a certain rpm, it just broke lose the rear and almost spun me out. In my 1st video which actually happened afterwards, I had to constantly correct my steering when I was on power throughout the run to keep the power down and keep me from spinning out. That was not the fastest way around the course as I mentioned, but the setup was strived for SIR track days. I wish I have separate cars for track days, autox, and street use.

For details on my current setup strived for track days, please see my upcoming post in the Tech Talk forum.
